Flint is back – and with extra content. Lume Books have re-issued the e-book box set of the five Jeffrey Flint archaeology mysteries with new covers, but that’s not all. One feature of my historical thrillers that readers have said they enjoy is the author’s note at the end, so notes have now been added to the books to put the adventures of Flint and his colleagues in their historical context.
Dr Jeffrey Flint’s adventures begin in the 1980s which now seems like a different era, with no internet or mobile phones. A reader coming to the books for the first time might be unsettled by the period, wondering why Flint never receives an email, why the police don’t make use of CCTV or DNA profiling and why college HR doesn’t take more interest in how staff behave.
Darkness Rises is set in 1989; Mrs Thatcher is still in power and is admired by characters such as Flint’s research student Tyrone. The Berlin Wall has yet to fall, only a handful of scientists fret about global warming and the Green movement is still finding its feet. Flint is sometimes befuddled by the modern world – but it’s not the world we live in now.
